On Saturday 10th August over 100 match officials (including a dozen ATCUSA ones) ventured to Adelaide Oval for the 2024-25 Season Launch with a breakfast function. Wayne ‘Flipper’ Phillips interviewed former SA and Netherlands player Tom Cooper who spoke about his time as a player and now as a coach at Woodville. Tom explained that he highly values open communication and positive interactions with umpires, and noted the important role scorers play in the world of cricket. To everyone’s surprise ‘Flipper’ did not once mention his 159 on debut, the first time in living memory. After breakfast to kick off the annual Umpire Seminar all participants took part in the Kaurna Walk, a tour of Adelaide Oval highlighting places of cultural significance. We then enjoyed a Q&A session between SA Men’s and Women’s Team Psychologist Gemma Johnson and SACA’s Drew Crozier. Drew is not only part of SACA’s State Umpire Panel but is an accomplished Rugby Union referee who is currently serving as Rugby Australia’s Match Officials Manager. The theme of the session was ‘Resilience & Performing Under Pressure’, and the umpires heard about many of Drew’s experiences on and off the field. Notably he discussed moving through times of adversity, as well as his strategies for controlling the physical elements of pressure such as breathing and heart rate. The umpires then divided into groups and rotated through three Development Sessions. Craig ran an engaging practical session in the Indoor Centre focussing on Wides and LBWs, with the help of our very own Graham Wood and Tanmoy Sana. Mick Sheppard covered the Expectations of an Umpire, from pre-match communication, uniforms, and general professionalism to accurate pitch assessments and the importance of umpire reports. As well as being a Premier Cricket umpire, Ali Cheema is a Learning Facilitator at Torrens University and he delivered a session on Emotional and Cultural Intelligence in umpiring, with a particular focus on communication, inter-personal interactions and self-development. A huge thanks to all of our guest speakers and presenters for an informative and memorable day.
